Blueberries and Beer

I was e-mailed an interesting article the other day and thought I might share it with ya’ll According to Runners World’s article titled Food Science,

  • Blueberries protect you on long runs
  • A pint of beer helps prevents colds – and can help when running a marathon
  • Ice baths hinder muscle refueling, and
  • Chocolate milk helps lose body fat

I do not believe the beer “fact”, and I find the chocolate milk fact, very interesting. I have never heard either before this article. I will have to test those two out and let you know if they work or not.

What do you think after reading the article!?

Let’s Switch Things Up

So I’m taking a couple of summer classes this summer and that is why I have been away for some time. While in school, I have been thinking about adding stuff to my blog. Not just recipes and fitness but maybe some fashion. As of now it is just a thought, but I think variety is always a good thing.

What do you think?

You Are What You Eat

Be careful what you are putting into your body!!!

You are what you eat, so be proud of the foods that you choose. The foods on the left of this chart are not only better for you, but more filling as well.

Options are KEY, having healthy options in your house will make you more likely to eat healthier.

Its a Botanical Life

Growing up, whenever someone in my house got a cut or scrape, my mom would get out the hydrogen peroxide and pour it on until the bubbles subsided.  The only thing about her ways that made me think twice was knowing that the hydrogen peroxide was going to sting, but if it bubbled up, it meant it was dirty and in need of cleaning.  Remember those good ol’ days?!

I kept up that tradition for quite some time thinking that my mom must have known what she was doing, so there wasn’t any reason why I should do things differently.  Then one day I learned that while cleaning wounds with hydrogen peroxide isn’t bad, it doesn’t actually work very well as an antiseptic and the bubbles are really just something cool to look at, as opposed to any real indication of how dirty the area is (check out for more info on that).  It was…

The Basics

No magic pills, no secret, just this simple formula.

To burn one pound of fat, you must burn 3500 calories above your BMR.  Now I’m not saying that you have to burn 3500 calories in one day, it is much easier to split it up throughout the week.

1.  The first thing you want to do is calculate your BMR.  Here’s a link to website that will do it for you but you can do the math by yourself using this formula:

Women: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) – ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) – ( 6.8 x age in year )

2.  Now many experts recommend to subtract 500 from…

I follow the amazing Kino Macgregor through her Facebook page, and she just posted a video this evening. Truly inspirational! I think yoga has amazing benefits. I also think eating whole, real foods has amazing benefits. So often we are encouraged to find hope within western-medicine and thinking. Again, I’m not against medication (as we know it) when needed, but I truly believe in the power of eating well and employing complimentary therapies like yoga, massage, and acupuncture to help people who are truly hurting.

May The 4th Be With You

Earlier today my friend Alex told me that today was “National Star Wars Day”, and then proceeded to say “may the fourth be with you.”  Now mind you I was clueless at first until he explained, because I am not into Star Wars what-so-ever.

Ever since he mentioned this, all I have heard or seen has to deal with Star Wars.  So todays post has to do with Star Wars.

I was looking for fun and creative treats to make so you can celebrate today and I think I came upon some pretty good recipes.

1) May the Fourth Be With You Push-Up Pops

2) Skywalker Smoothie

3) Jedi Juice Pops

4) Wookie Cookies

5) Yoda Soda

Baked Zucchini Chips

I LOVE zucchini!  I cook it all the time for a mid-afternoon or a late evening snack.  However I was wondering the other day, ‘there has to be more ways to cook zucchini than just on top of my stove.’

I started browsing the internet and came across a baked zucchini chips recipe.

Remember because it is a “baked” recipe it will take longer to cook; however the upside is that it only takes  3 ingredients.
  • 4 medium zucchini (long and thin), sliced very thinly
  • cooking spray
  • sea salts
If you decide to try this simple easy and delicious recipe, let me know what you think!

Cinco de Mayo: 5 Healthy Recipes To Kick Off Your Weekend

Everyone knows what this Saturday is correct?  Cinco de Mayo!  To kick of the holiday early I found some healthy recipes that I thought everyone might enjoy.

1) Edamame Guacamole

Not only is guacamole nutritious for you, but it also comes with a ton of health benefits as well.

2) Mango Salsa

Mango salsa is vibrantly colorful and rich in vitamins and minerals, which means it looks good and is good for you.

3) White Sangria

Livestrong tells us that even though sangria is alcohol, it is low in fat, high in vitamin C, and has a source of B Vitamins.  Surprised?

4) Yogurt-Salsa Dip

I know what you are thinking, yogurt mixed with salsa? It is a twist on the regular salsa we know, so why not try it?  It is also healthy, so if you really want to go bold and try this dish try using greek yogurt!

5) Spicy Lime Pork Kebabs

Who wouldn’t want to kick off their weekend with some pork, vegetables, and lime juice and hot sauce for some flavoring.  Sounds good to me!

Through Kat's Eyes

I think most of us have figured out that what we put into our bodies affects the outside, our skin.  There are so many amazing foods that can make a huge difference in the health of your skin and the easiest way to take advantage of using multiple super foods at once is to…make a smoothie!! Smoothies sound especially nice during this time of year when the weather is getting warmer and we are showing more skin; here is a recipe for a smoothie I made today to not only quench my thirst but also to indulge my skin.

  • Strawberries- All berries are a great source of antioxidants which I am sure everyone has been hearing about for a while now. Antioxidants protect the skin against free radical damage, aid in anti aging and prevent further damage to the skin (1 cup sliced).
  • Spinach Yes it sounds weird to put in a…

How to get lean and toned

I’m a pretty thin and fit girl, but I’m not satisfied.  What I’ve been wanting for a while is to be toned (my body to show a firmness of muscle!) If I’m not running with a friend, you can find me at the YMCA running and of course working out.

I try my best to run around 3 miles everyday, lift weights, and of course Hot Yoga!  Thanks to yoga I have become a lot stronger and I can feel that I have become more toned,  BUT I can’t see it yet. As of now I have to be standing in a certain position, or flex just a tad..**UGH!!**

I am mainly aiming for my stomach to become defined and my love handles to disappear (crossing fingers). Running has helped my stomach and glutes trim down, but again – it’s hard to satisfy me.

So, 1) I decided to run a marathon, and 2) I looked up a couple of ways that women can get toned.

According to Livestrong, “The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that adults should receive about 6 servings of whole grains, 2.5 cups of vegetables, 2 cups of fruit, 3 cups of dairy, and 5.5 oz. of protein every day.” Sounds easy right?

Livestrong continues to tell us about the correct amount of portion control, consistency, and the importance of exercise.

Weightloss tells us how we (men and women) can tone our body.  What we need to do, how we can do it, how to do it at the gym, along with 3 experts giving advice on how to get a toned body!

Earth Day: Healthy Dirt and Worms Sundae

Dirt n’ Worms Sundae

Everyone remembers making Dirt and Worms for Earth Day in middle school and how delicious it was, am I not right?  Mounds of rich vanilla ice cream and hot fudge topped with whipped cream, Oreos, and gummy worms.  Does it not get any better than that?

Earth Day is this Sunday and I thought that I would find a healthier version of what we all know and love.

DietsinReview came up with a healthier version of this delicious dessert.  Their version features non-fat chocolate greek yogurt, Newman’s O’s for the ‘dirt,’ and mini gummies as the ‘worms.’  The calories, carbs, and sugars are cut in half.  So why not give it a try and celebrate Earth Day this Sunday.
