Reading Food Nutrition Labels – American vs. England

Nutrition Labels, they confuse us all admit it.  From the amount per serving down to the total carbs per meal.  Wouldn’t it be easier if they labeled every packaged with this label on the left.

Well, to our luck two major food industry trade associations, the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the Food Marketing Institute, have gone ahead and developed a front of package label without waiting for the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine. It’s based on “Nutrition Keys” such as calories, saturated fat, sodium, and sugars.

The manufactures only have to provide us with one of the figures and leave out the others, or they may choose to place 2,3, or all 4 on the package.

I’m a bigger fan of this label because it is on the front of the package; but what if we got rid of both of these labels and switched to the red light green light label like England has!

What is the red light / green light label you ask?

With the same idea in mind as our packaging labels, England has adopted a similar front of package labeling.  Theirs provides color coded information based on a traffic light idea. Green, yellow, and red. The idea is that shoppers can aim to have more of their cart filled with green, less with yellow, and minimize the red.

GREAT idea, right!?

DIY Fizzy Drinks – without the soda

Are you are like me and and hate soda BUT miss that sweet taste?

If so this is for you!!  I came across some delicious DIY (do it yourself) recipes on how to makes some fizzy drinks that taste good and are all 120 calories or less.  What is not to like about that?

Pineapple-Rosemary-Ginger Soda

MAKES 6 SERVINGS. Per serving: 70 cal, 0 g fat, 19 g carbs, 0 mg sodium, 2 g fiber, 0 g protein

Cherry-Vanilla Soda

MAKES 6 SERVINGS. Per serving: 80 cal, 0 g fat, 18.5g carbs, 5 mg sodium, 0 g fiber, 1 g protein

Orange-Mango-Strawberry Soda

Lemon Water vs. Lime Water

Everyone knows that lemon water helps boost your metabolism, BUT what about lime water?

I think lime water tastes better, it’s not as sour, and it has the tropical taste to it.

Lemon water and lime water have similar but different advantages.

Lemon Water

  • Boost Immune System -They’re high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function
  • Clears Skin – can actually be applied directly to scars to help reduce their appearance.
  • Freshens Breath – can also help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis

Lime Water

  • Weight loss – The citric acid present in lime is an excellent fat burner. Just have two glasses a day and see the remarkable result within a week.
  • Skin Care – reduces body odor, cures dandruff, rashes, bruises, etc. and gives you a refreshing bath if its juice or oil is mixed into your bathing water.
  • Eye Care – protect eyes from aging and macular degeneration.
  • Other Benefits: It is a good appetizer and digestive. It helps cure arthritis, rheumatism, prostrate and colon cancer, cholera, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, fatigue, heart diseases and even very high fever (contrary to popular belief). The best part of it is that it has no side effects.

 

Superfood Smoothie

Smoothies!  An easy way to get your daily recommended fruit fast, also a good nutritious drink that just taste amazing!

I came across a superfood smoothie that sounded interesting, so I had to taste it.  To my surprise the smoothie was amazing!!

Ingredients:
2 handfuls spinach and 1 handful kale
1/2-3/4 cup orange juice
10-12 baby carrots
1 ripe banana
1/2 cup plain non-fat greek yogurt
1 cup frozen mixed berries

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Yields: 2 Smoothies

Method:

1. In a reliable blender, puree spinach, kale, and oj in a blender until only flecks of green remain.

2. Add all other ingredients.  Blend until smooth, about 2 minutes.

I do realize most people are way more excited to get wasted off of green beer on St. Patrick’s day over drinking green smoothies. HOWEVER… for those of you who are on the health tip OR just want to try and beat that nasty hangover the day after? These delish green detox smoothies are for you:

Basic Green Smoothie Recipe

  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1 banana
  • 1 orange
  • ½ apple
  • ½ lemon
  • 1/2 inch chunk fresh ginger (optional)
  • 2 cups of kale, spinach, chard, or beet greens

DIRECTIONS:

Add the water. Then fill your blender half way with fruit and the rest of the way with greens. Depending on the power of your blender, you may need to add slowlywhile blending. Blend for 1-2 minutes, or until very smooth.

**Filtered water and organic fruit and greens are best – but again, do the best you can with what you have. Apples and berries are more important to select organic than are peeled citrus and bananas. Chop the fruit and ginger – a stronger blender can take larger chunks. The orange and lemon can be juiced or just peeled with seeds removed. Apples and ginger can be left unpeeled for extra nutrients.**

  • 1 cup coconut water (or milk)
  • 1 whole orange peeled
  • 2 cups of Kale
  • 3-4 large strawberries

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients. Blend until rich and smooth.

It is better for you than regular yogurt since it has twice the protein, and for those of you who go to the gym/workout this is an easy way to get that extra protein.

  • Cholesterol: 10 milligrams
  • Sodium: 50 milligrams
  • Sugar: 6 grams
  • Protein: 15 grams
  • Calcium: 15 percent on a 2,000-calorie diet

  • Total fat: 0 grams
  • Cholesterol 5 milligrams
  • Sodium: 120 milligrams
  • Sugar: 12 grams

I put granola with my greek yogurt, but was wondering…what else can I do with this yogurt and still make it tasty.

I found a couple of interesting recipes, one which included making chocolate icing with only yogurt and chocolate chips.

Become A Warrior

Running!  Not many people enjoy it, BUT what if you could make it fun?!  Would you run? Many of you have heard of triathlons, which sound like to much work for me.  However when I heard of THE WARRIOR DASH, I checked it out and immediatley decided I was going to RUN!!

Warrior Dash is not just a “race” per say.  It is more of an obstacle course.

Is Green Tea Better Than Water?

ImageHave you ever heard about this before?  Green tea or tea in general being better for you than water!

It is said that you are suppose to have at least 3 cups a day of tea, and then the recommended amount of water on top of that.  Now that is A LOT of fluids.

I was never a big tea drinker until I found out all the benefits of what green tea can do for you.  Now I drink tea all the time.  If only you saw my cabinet at home.  I have one just for tea 🙂

Some of the benefits that got me drinking tea are as follows:

  • weight loss
  • prevents skin damage
  • soothes stress (which I get a lot)
  • helps protect against diabetes
  • prevents cancer and sun damage

and much much more!

Yes green tea will do this, but so will other tea, BUT it is just said that green tea is the way to go.  However I go for the flavor when I drink tea.
